What Would You Do?

I was sent this video the other day and honestly it shocked me.

Because it shows humanity for what it is, self-interested and judgmental.

For those of who can’t watch it the premise is this:

Would you help somebody who fell on the floor in the middle of the street?

What if it was a man?

What if he was homeless?

What if he looked drunk?

As we progress tough these stages of the person falling down we quickly begin to see how society reacts to the vulnerable and especially to the homeless.

Nobody called for help as the man lay on the ground because he deserved it, he was a bum and he was helpless. So they all moved along, until another homeless lady helped him.

I would like to believe like the viewers on the video, that in this situation I would do differently, I would help and I would care but honestly I don’t know.

Please watch the video. And try and figure out what would you do?

I always say that I believe humanity is good and capable of good, but our selfishness and judgmental behaviour always blinds it.

Last week i was in London, and there was a homeless man. It was raining and very windy and he had some boxes he was carrying around. The wind blew all his boxes, and he was chasing, in vain, after them . I’m not trying to show off, but i actually stopped, dropped the bags i was carying at the moment and i chased his boxes, i brought him two of them and he had the other two. He was so kind and sweet, he thanked me and told me that he love me and that i’m so beautiful :$
lol, i know , this is silly, but it felt amazing, truly amazing!

I think i would definitely help, regardless of the person i’m helping!
the video was really sad, and eye-opening for me, thank you for sharing it.

I’ve always believed that humanity is capable of brilliant and fantastic things, but this faith has been waning over the last few years, especially in the time I’ve been homeless.

More and more I am seeing how selfish and inward society has become; help is only offered if it will in someway benefit the giver, not the receiver. However much it pains me to say, this video doesn’t surprise me one bit.

I’ve seen similar scenarios played out in Melbourne. On one occasion I was out walking and saw an elderly woman trip badly on the pavement a few hundred yards in front of me. By the time I got to her a dozen people had walked past oblivious to her pain, by the time the ambulance I’d called arrived, at least two dozen had walked on by.

I’ve always thought that’s why we’re here – to help others as best we can? To make this world a better place. It frustrates me that this seems to have become lost somewhere along the way.

thats exactly how I feel, we’ve become obsessed with whats in it for me? mentality.

And that thing about the old lady is sad and I’ve seen it happen countless times as well.

funny u should ask about this now. i can truthfully answer this cos it happened to me last month. i was going into a drug store with my mom to get her prescriptions. outside the door there was a man on the ground up against the building. he had an open snack package by him. i couldn’t just walk past. i called an ambulance just in case. when they got there they had a hard time waking him up. the bad thing was that the fire dept and paramedics acted like i bothered them. i said listen, if this was my mom i would want someone to make sure she was ok. they came with the attitude it was just some bum sleeping. they had a real hard time waking him up. i am still not sure something wasnt wrong. i walked away to give him privacy with the paramedics as his business is his business. i came out a lil while later and they were all gone. i dont know what happened to him. i hope that if he needed care he got it. maybe i should have monitored what happened more. idk. but i am sad to say (and a lil pissed off) that the attitude the fire dept had was wrong. everyone is equal in emergency care. it doesnt matter who. if u cant treat everyone the same, then maybe u r burnt out and u need a different job.

But I really don’t like what you just said. A homeless person is a normal person like you or me. Not a novelty or a pet to have.

i got your point but what i saw on the video and what a learned by reading your blog is that homeless people has a different perspective of life and they are more lovable and caring than anyone else. They really look out for each other,they treat themselves as family and this is unknown for me, my friends are around me because i’m just like them but they don’t really care if i’m sad or in need of something. You always say here that you believe people are good and that’s not what a see every day since i’ve seen dozen of people layed on the floor and i never approached to make sure if they were sleeping or dying ’cause i’m afraid to be beat up and desrespected, or i’m late or too selfish to analyze the options….

even though i know your blog for about a year i never had the time to read it like i want to. Nevertheless you made me a better person.

I think most people would like to help, and feel badly about anyone who is homeless, but are either afraid or just don’t really know what to do. Sometimes homeless people have so many issues (addiction, mental health problems, etc) that people figure there’s nothing a well intentioned person can really do to change the situation anyway. It’s a huge problem. Most people mean well, I believe.
